How to choose the right type of bin bag

For day-to-day household waste (including kitchen waste), you should choose a bag with a medium thickness. You want something with enough strength to hold the weight of its contents without wasting money on a heavy-duty refuse sack. Tying off the bag is important, so choose a product with a drawstring top or one with handles that tie across the top from opposite sides of the bag. Another thing to check is the size of the bag compared to the size of your bin. If you don’t know the volume of your bin, you can work out the right size of bin bag by calculating the perimeter of the bin (for a rectangular bin, that’s the total length of all four sides; for a round bin, that’s the diameter of the opening multiplied by π (or approximately 3.14)). Divide that number by 2, and that’s how wide the bin bag needs to be. For depth, measure the bin from the base to the top and add 10–15 cm. That will tell you how long the bin bag needs to be.
