Planning a clear-out, renovation, or building project in Cannock? A skip is an incredibly convenient way to manage your waste. However, before you arrange for a skip to be delivered, it’s crucial to understand the rules and regulations surrounding skip placement, especially if it needs to go on public land.
In this article, we’re going to talk about the relevant paperwork relating to skip hire in Cannock, whether or not you need it, and how to go about applying for it.
The short answer is: it depends on where you plan to put your skip.
You DO NOT need a skip permit if the skip will be placed entirely on private land, such as your driveway, garden, or private construction site.
You DO need a skip permit if the skip (or any other bulky item like ‘hippo’ bags, builders’ materials on pallets, or unfixed temporary items specifically agreed upon by the council) needs to be placed on any part of the public highway. This includes roads, pavements, and verges.
Essentially, if any part of the skip will be on land accessible to the public, a permit is required by Staffordshire County Council. This is to ensure public safety, manage traffic flow, and prevent obstruction. Failure to obtain a permit can result in fines and the removal of the skip.
It’s also important to note that if a delivery lorry needs to cross a public pedestrian way to place a skip on your private property, you might also need a temporary crossing permit.
The good news is that for skips and other building materials on the highway, the application for a “Permit to Place Items on the Highway” is generally straightforward, though it requires specific steps to be followed.
Under Staffordshire County Council’s regulations, permit applications can be made by the service provider (that’s us) so long as they are registered with the council to place materials on the highway (which we are). This means that our Cannock customers can rest easy, knowing that we will handle the relevant paperwork on their behalf.
When you book your skip with us, we will ask if you intend for it to be placed on a public highway in Cannock. As your skip hire provider, we will apply to Staffordshire County Council for the “Permit to Place Items on the Highway”. The current fee for a permit is £41. This fee covers the permit for a maximum of 7 calendar days on a classified (A, B, C) road or a maximum of 14 calendar days elsewhere (or part thereof). If you need to extend the permit, a renewal also costs £41 for the same durations.
Staffordshire County Council aims to process permit applications within 5 working days. It’s crucial to factor this lead time into your project schedule to avoid delays. There are various rules regarding the placement of skips, even with the permit, and we make sure that your skip complies with all of them. Once the permit is approved and issued to us, we can then deliver your skip to the agreed-upon location.
