6 ways to reduce your household waste

With the rise of environmental issues, we all need to play our part in being more eco-friendly for the good of the planet. There’s also more pressure from local authorities to manage waste better, and recycle where we can.

But, where do you even start? Read on for 6 tips to help you reduce your household waste and do your bit for the environment:

1. Repurpose what you can

Don’t throw anything away without taking a minute to consider what else you could use it for.

For instance, you could use newspapers and magazines to wrap or pack things, or egg cartons for arts and craft projects. You’ll find there’s usually more than one purpose for most things!

2. Use a compost bin

This is one of the simplest and yet most effective things you can do to recycle your household waste.  In fact, using a compost bin for your food waste and garden waste is now a mandatory requirement by many local authorities.

3. Carry a reusable shopping bag

It’s easy to take a canvas bag or a ‘bag for life’ with you when you go grocery shopping. If you do have to use plastic bags, reuse them as many times as you possibly can before throwing them away.

4. Recycle large items by taking them to the tip or hire a skip

Many people are unsure of how to dispose of bulkier items, and may not necessarily do it in the most eco-friendly way. Transport them to a recycling tip if you have enough space your car. If you have a large amount of waste, you can always hire a skip and have it collected from your house with ease.

5. Avoid products with lots of plastic packaging

This one is easier said than done, as there are so many household products that come wrapped in lots of unnecessary plastic which takes forever to decompose. However, the more consumers make a conscious effort to avoid purchasing such products, the quicker manufacturers will realise that they need to opt for eco-friendly packaging.

6. Take care to recycle your household waste

This one is the most obvious, but it’s worth mentioning as it’s easy to get a little careless when sorting out rubbish into the designated bins. To avoid any recyclable items making their way into the wrong bing,  get a recycling bin for inside the house. You can then easily filter your rubbish before you throw it away, meaning you don’t have to rummage through and sort it on rubbish day.
