Why Everyone Should Visit the Black Country

Nestled in the centre of the British Isles in the historic West Midlands, the Black Country is an amazing place to live, visit and do business in. With an illustrious history, beautiful scenery and a famous hospitality, it’s not surprising to hear that many people who visit fall in love with the region.

As waste management specialists who have run our family business in the Black Country for over 25 years, our team has a special place in our hearts for the region. With this in mind, we wanted to spend a bit of time gushing over why everyone needs to visit the Black Country.

The iconic history

The story of the industrial revolution is intrinsically linked with the Black Country, as the region became one of the most industrialised places in the whole of the UK. The name Black Country is directly linked to the fact that the UK’s largest coal stream can be found in the area, which makes areas of soil black.

Acting as the industrial heart of the UK, the area was filled with factories forges and foundries which helped to power the British Empire. The people of the Black Country are extremely proud of their history and, with evidence of past industry still scattered across the region, it’s not hard to find a slice of history.

Stunning views

Sadly, the Black Country gained a bit of a bad reputation as a place where natural beauty came second to its important industry. It’s even said that J.R.R Tolkein based the orcish homeland of Mordor on the area. However, these days, the Black Country is awash with some of the most beautiful landscapes in the country.

Sandwell Valley Country Park in West Bromwich is a prime example of the natural beauty of the West Midlands. Spanning 1,800 of wild countryside, the park boasts bike paths, bird watching opportunities and walking routes.

Amazing attractions

You’ll never be stuck for things to do when you visit the Black Country, as there are a range of things to see and do that will keep you busy, no matter how long your stay is. In keeping with the region’s proud history, The Black Country Living Museum in Dudley is a must-see. The faithfully recreated Victorian street gives visitors a glimpse into the past as they walk down cobbled streets and past period-dressed actors.

Dudley Zoo is also an amazing attraction and one of the most iconic in the whole of the Black Country. Situated on the grounds of an 11th century castle, the zoo is home to a range of rare and exotic animals such as tigers, bears and kangaroos.
